Joinable Group Suggestions

Since no one won the "Create a joinable group" option in Deal with the Devil and with the game now offline, I'm going to allow an open enrollment of sorts.

I'm going to go into a (somewhat) long winded explanation of joinable groups so that anyone that may not know what I am talking about will have the information in front of them. I'll try to organize this in a way that those that do know what I'm talking about can just skip to the parts they want/need to read.

1. What is a joinable group
Think of "joinable groups" as another way of saying "clubs". When you join a joinable group, you'll have that group listed as part of your profile. People can view the clubs you have joined and see what you may like, dislike, or whatever. It's similar to the old "signature club" we used to have, only without the hassle of having to add annoying images to your signature.

For most joinable groups, the only benefit for joining is to be part of the club. You'll have the group listed in your profile and that's the end of it. On very rare occasions, joining a group will enable you to see a hidden folder (such as the Thunderdome). Hidden folders will be very, very rare and will only be added when such a folder is actually needed.

2. An example of a joinable group
The Thunderdome is the best (and currently the only) example of a joinable group. This is one case where you get access to a hidden folder when you join the group. Should you choose to join the group, you'll have the "Thunderdome" group added in your profile and you'll gain access to the Thunderdome folder.

3. How to join a joinable group
Enter your Preferences settings. On the right side, you'll see a menu labeled Profile Options. At the bottom of that column, you'll see Joinable Groups. Click that link to view a full listing of all joinable groups. When you see a group you would like to join, click the Join Group link located on the far right. Depending on the type of joinable group (see below), you may have to wait for approval before you are in the group.

4. How to voluntarily leave a joinable group
Almost exactly the same as joining a group:

Preferences > Profile Options > Joinable Groups > Leave Group

That's the basic knowledge of what a Joinable Group is. Now, we'll get into more specific information that you'll need to know to request your own joinable group:

5. Types of Joinable Groups
There are three types of joinable groups:
  1. Open Group - Anyone that wants to join the group can do so by simply pressing the "Join Group" link.
  2. Required Approval - The group leader must approve new membership.
  3. Invitation Only - The group leader must send an invite to any potential member. The member must then accept the invite.

6. How to kick someone from your group
There is currently no easy to to kick a member out of a group. Members can leave voluntarily, but leaders cannot kick anyone out. This is something that is suppose to be added eventually. But for now, we'll have to work around it. A group leader is free to kick anyone out of their group at any time they wish. To do so, they must PM the member and inform them they are being kicked out of the group. That member must then alter their settings to leave that group. Should that person refuse to leave the group on his own will, then the group leader needs to contact myself or another member of the staff. That person will be asked nicely once again to leave the group. Failure to do so at that point will result in disciplinary action. May sound harsh, but I am hoping everyone will simply alter their own settings without need of staff telling them to do so.

7. Minimum requirements
I do not want to have an absurd number of joinable groups, since that would somewhat diminish the feature. At the same time, I do want everyone to have fun with this option. So I'm going to place the following minimum requirements on all Joinable Groups:
  1. Group Leader must be active - I can understand when things pop up that may cause people to be less active online. Computer problems happen, school work can be more demanding, work schedules can be more hectic, people go on vacations, things pop up. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about people that simply leave the forums with no explanations and are, for all intents and purposes, gone. Any group that is led by someone that goes inactive will be deleted. I'll post a notice before I delete the group to give a chance for a new group leader to be established.

  2. You may not lead more than 2 groups - This is just to keep the number of groups from growing too greatly. You can join as many groups as you want, but you can only be the group leader for 2 groups.

  3. You must have at least 3 members - Another way to keep the number of groups in check. It may be cool to create some wacky and zany group, but if no one is joining then it's just cluttering the "Joinable Groups" list. You are one person, so you just need to find at least 2 other people to join your group (and stay in your group). And secondary accounts will not count as part of this requirement.

7. Deleting a group
A group can be deleted at any time should a group leader decide to have it deleted. Simply inform me somehow and I'll delete it for you. A group leader can be kind enough to ask if anyone else wants to lead the group, thus keeping the group intact and allowing said leader to possibly create a new group (if he's already at his 2 group maximum), but it isn't required.

That's all the explanation I can think of at the moment. If I've left anything out or if anyone needs any clarity, then you are free to ask. If you wish to request a joinable group of your own, please reply (in this thread) with the following template:

Quote:

Group Name -
Group Description - (A sentence or two, no more. You may have an image as your description if you wish, but nothing too large.)
Type - (Open, Leader Approval, or Invitation Only)

Obviously, I will not approve any group that would violate any forum rules. So nothing too violent, gruesome, or sexually driven.

Would it count if I was a "Fan of the Harry Potter book and/or movies"?

Just a reminder to all requesting joinable groups, remember that you must have at least 3 members in order to keep your group active. I didn't set a deadline, but lets ballpark it and say if you don't have at least three (active) members within a week of creation, your group will be removed. That same rule goes for my "Potter Watch" group, which sadly hasn't gotten 3 members yet. :(

No. You can talk about basketball in the Entertainment and Sports forum. As I explained in the first post:

The only group with an added forum is the Thunderdome group. Posts do not increase within the Thunderdome. No other group has added forums.
