I know you are sick of me asking this, but any idea on when this will be active and ready to use?

People ask a lot at the support boards. No new information has been given, really. But I'll copy and past the information that the staff gave during the last active thread about the Search Feature:

The fundamental issue with search is that is it hard. Anybody who has ever had to create a search system for anything knows that. Searching is hard and resource intensive.
Because it is so hard, it takes a lot of time to get it right.

We recently tested a new search function with positive results. We are working on it, and there is progress being made. I don't want to use the word "soon" because that word has a way of twisting itself into "within the week" or "within the month." I will say, though, that it is much closer to be being complete.

Having said that, the reason it's off on some boards is to spare server load. Having thousands of people simultaneously searching through millions of posts is very hard on the servers. We're pretty much at the "working out the kinks" phase, but because the "kinks" are so large, providing a time-table would be hard.

Again, this is amazingly difficult. Most forum's search function is a trivial feature since you're searching one forum. We have a large amount of forums hosted on the same server, meaning you have tens of thousands (not an over-statement) of people searching at once. When tens of thousands of people are searching and pulling info from the database it takes everyone longer to load every page and use every function. The default IF search was removed for this exact reason; it killed load times on the servers and brought them to a crawl. Google has thousands of servers dedicated to nothing but searching. You might call this an unfair comparison, but keep in mind that no more than a hundred thousand people are searching at once on a single Google server. Our search doesn't just effect a search function; It effects every single page on every single server.

There are few of you who recall what Invisionfree was like 4 years ago when we had Search and only one server. But many of us became well acquainted with the database error message "There appears to be an error with the board you are trying to visit..."

Search was one of the major causes of the consistent downtime. Find all posts was the other cause. Find all topics greatly reduced the load on the server and that is why find all posts was replaced. Also the option to download a copy of your board had to be removed. All of these changes greatly improved server 1 and the rest of the boards as a whole. Now, seeing "There appears to be an error." on your board is a rarity.

With Zetaboards, Brandon has come a long way optimizing the performance of the servers. Currently you can use find all posts on all boards and search on small boards. Search on large boards is coming. But in order to avoid database errors, it's coming slowly. It's being checked and rechecked. Everything that can be done to improve it is being done. And as with anything Brandon has released, it is worth the wait.

To summarize: the search feature slows down the entire server, which is bad. When they find a way to have the search feature work without slowing down the entire server, then it'll work again.

Personally, I wouldn't put my hopes on the Search feature working anytime soon. They've been saying the same thing since they took the Search Feature offline some 4 or 5 years ago. it was suppose to return when we upgraded to ZB, but there have been complications.

complications.
Underpants gnomes have gone digital.

Phase 1: Collect Underpants Complicate Searches
Phase 2: ?
Phase 3: Profit!

Spoiler: click to toggle

Sucks about the likelihood of never having a search engine, though. Not that I'm sure I'd use it very much if we had a working one. :-/

They set up their posting system wrong from the beginning...

If posts were organised categorically by forum, and record as such, you could easily search through your forums posts, regardless of how many forums you have per server

Thanks to this recent upgrade we were able to double the power of the ZB search function. Now boards with as many as 150,000 posts will be able to use the search function on their community. This is an increase from the previous limit of 75,000. On top of that we're working on other upgrades to the search system that should eventually allow boards of any size to use the system.

I didn't make a big fuss over this particular announcement because it doesn't affect us, but they are working to improve the search feature. It's just a very slow process.
