I question the logic behind our Thunderdome rules. I can understand the spamming one and no post count one, assuming that those rules are in place to maintain some control and order of the more important/busy sections of our forum (although the Thunderdome itself is quite ordered so idk). What I cannot understand is why there is a no flaming rule outside of the Thunderdome. Why is it that I can lash out at people on one part of this website but not another? Assuming that it's not spam, I don't quite see the logic behind this rule. Thankyou sincerely, Nebz C. |

For the sake of this conversation, I will define flamming as a malicious attack on another forum member. I am not talking about two people that are friendly towards each other trading insults with one another in a light-hearted way. I am specifically talking about situations where members are insulting one another, being rude to one another, or attacking each other in any way. In all my forum experience, I have found that nothing good comes out of open flamming. A couple of different situations I've seen due to open flamming: One: I've seen very good, active threads die due to open flamming. Take a Raw thread for example. Everyone is coming in, giving their opinions on Raw, replying to each others opinions, but basically staying on the topic of whatever happened on Raw. Say two people disagree each other and start flamming on another. I don't mean they disagree with each other and have a debate on their opposing views. I mean they abandon on-topic attempts and just insult one another. People may try to post around them at first, but eventually, threads turn into nothing more than those guys flamming each other. Any good, on-topic, interesting conversations people were having about Raw (or whatever topic) is lost because the thread has been overtaken by someone's flamming. Two: We all have posting friends. People that share our opinions/personality traits and like to post with us for that. I've seen several situations where one person got into a flame war with another person and then friends of each got involved to spark a huge flame war between half the forum. And most of the argument had nothing to do with what the two originally starting arguing over. Most of the argument became "this is my friend, so I'm going to insult you for insulting him/her". Three: When left unchecked, a simple flame war can turn into a full board problem. Two people are arguing in one thread. They aren't arguing on topic because they disagree with each others opinions on whatever. They are just insulting each other because they don't like each other. They start in this thread. Then they go into that thread. Then this person's friends come in to attack that person. The other person's friends come in to attack those guys. Eventually, you have loads of people arguing in multiple areas of the forum, none of which is on any particular point. Thread conversations are lost and activity takes a slight dip for the day (or as long as the flame war continues) because people not involved feel there is no need to post since their on-topic points are going to be ignored in favor of someone insulting someone else. Four: It just creates a very bad forum image. You have guests coming in or even casual posters coming in to view the forums. If they open a thread wanting to read about this week's Raw episode, but are treated to pages of one person flamming another, then they aren't likely to stick around too long. It hurts more than it helps. Five: One person flames another person, but the second person involved decides to ignore the flames and try to post like normal. The flamming member trolls the non-flamming member, constantly insulting him, trying to get him to flame back. If left unchecked and if carried on for long enough, the non-flamming member can become disinterested in the forums and just leave, costing us a member. I could give more examples, but I think I've given enough examples to make my point clear. Open flamming is just bad for the forums. And I'm not talking about when two members get into a heated argument over whatever topic. I mean, if it's just the two of them replying with on-topic posts and happen to slip in a few insults, but they are both doing it, then I almost always just let them carry on. I'm specifically talking about when people are completely off topic and are just insulting one another. Some people like to flame, some don't. By allowing it to happen in the Thunderdome, then people have a place to express their anger at another member, but it doesn't overtake the forums. And if the other person doesn't want to flame back, then he doesn't have to see it everywhere. |
